Adding a New Twist to Recycling

When it comes to art, Teguh Ostenrik draws from nature. The most recent of his masterpieces, themed “defacement”, includes facial expressions formed from discarded factory machines.

For Teguh Ostenrik, recycling has long been part of conceptual artwork. “ I’m basically looking for materials that I can recycle. In bali, I created a plastic waste pyramid, “Tgeuh said, recalling a project that involved collecting domestic plastic waste, compressed into blocks and formed into a giant pyramid. “ I wasn’t alone, “he added. “I had many Balinese villagers and youth organization help me the collecting.”
What matters is raising awarness, which is also his aim with this “defacement” exhibition. “Many factory machines break down over time. I cut up these machines and put them together into artistic forms. I manipulate the different shapes of the machines by welding them into sculptures. I don’t use any new material.”
Some people still them as trash. “We can never forget that trash is also a product of works. It’s like with our every move we’re doing something that ruins this earth. So what can we give back to mother earth ? that is one question I often ask myself.” Not wishing to create propaganda, Teguh starts with himself and his actions.
Never envisioning the end result, Teguh works with what he ‘sees’ in different steel pieces. He cuts out a triangle from a steel cyclinder and declares it a nose. He fuses damaged welding electrodes with steel disks for hair. “ I never sketch anything. Even with the hair, I never twist it. The damaged welding electrodes come in those shapes. In the process, these parts can develop into something that I never think about in the beginning. I let them play with my imagination, “he said. “ That’s why If you ask what the name of this sculpture is, I have no idea because it’s not done yet.”
Teguh’s imagination works like a welding torch. “Have you ever looked up to the clouds and thought ‘well, that one looks like a nose?’ That’s what I feel when I look at those machines, even before they were cut into pieces,” Teguh explained. He purposefully rusts all the steel he works with to match the natural color.
The most recent additions to “defacement” were finished in the past year. During the first six months of that process, he worked in Penang, Malaysia, under the “Artist in Residence” program. Then he moved to Serang, West Java, and worked with Nikko Steel,PT. Alam Lestari Unggul, a welding electrode factory that was delighted to see their junk pile put to use.

Passive voice adalah kalimat yang dibuat berdasarkan objek perbuatan yang dilakukan oleh subjek. Siapa pun atau apa pun yang melakukan kegiatan ini bukanlah subjek tata bahasa dari kalimat.

Penggunaan Passive voice dibagi menjadi 3 macam, yaitu :

1. Past Simple

Was / were + Verb 3 ( Past Participle )

2. Past Continuous

Was / were being + Verb 3 ( Past Participle )

3. Past Perfect

Had been + Verb 3 ( Past patrciple )

Example :

1. Past Simple

This rug was made by my aunt.

2. Past Continuous

The room was being cleaned when I arrived.

3. Past Perfect

The room looked much better. It had been cleaned.

Degree Of Comparison

Degree of comparison digunakan untuk menujukkan derajat atau tingkat perbandingan manakala kita membandingkan sesuatu : ‘sama’, ‘lebih’ atau ‘paling’.

Ada tiga tingkat perbandingan :

1. Positive degree ( tingkat perbandingan ‘sama’ ).

2. Comparative degree ( tingkat perbandingan ‘lebih’ ).

3. Superlative degree ( tingkat perbandingan ‘paling’ ).

Example :

1. Possitive degree à As ………. As

( adjective / adverb )

Contoh : Tina is as tall as ani.

2. Comparative degree à menggunakan …… + …… + –er than

( adjective / adverb )

or more + … + than

Contoh :

Ø He is older than I am.

Ø That brown chair is more comfortable than this one.

3. Superlative degree à menggunakan the … - est atau the most …

Conditional sentences adalah kalimat yang menyatakan syarat. Yang kalimatnya menerangkan tentang harapan, khayalan, dan khayalan yang mustahil terjadi. Conditional sentences dibagi menjadi 3 macam type, yaitu :

1. Type I ( Harapan )
If + Present tense + Future Tense
Keterangan :
Real ini present / future.

2. Type II ( Khayalan )
If + Past Tense + Past Future
Keterangan :
Unreal in present / future.

3. Type III ( Khayalan yang mustahil terjadi )
If + Past Perfect + Past Future Perfect
Keterangan :
Unreal in past..

Contoh Kalimat :
1. Type I
If I have a screwdriver of the proper size, I will fix your bicycle.
If he has a sharp razor, Jack will shave today.

Adjective clause disebut juga “relative clauses”. Kalimat adjective terdiri dari subjek dan predikat yang kata benda dan kata gantinya telah dimodifikasi terlebih dahulu. Dalam pikiran kata pengantar siapa ( who ) atau itu untuk seseorang ( A person ), yang mana ( which ) atau itu untuk benda ( thing ), ketika ( when ) untuk waktu ( a time ), dimana ( where ) untuk suatu tempat ( a place ), kenapa ( why ) untuk suatu alasan ( a reason ).

Contoh kalimat

1. A person

Introductory : Who, Whom, Whose.

Subject : He paid the money to the man who had done the work.

Object : He paid the man whom he had hired.

Object of preposition : He paid the man from whom he had borrowed the money.

Possessive : This is the girl whose picture you saw.

2. A thing

Introductory : Which, of which

Subject : Here is a book which describes animals.
